  1. What is a Sooner? College sports fans are hard-pressed to find a nickname that is as unique and as linked to a state’s history as a Sooner. The University of Oklahoma is the only school known as Sooners. The Oklahoma Territory opened with the Land Run of 1889. Settlers from across the globe, seeking free land, made their way to the prairies of the plains to stake their claim to a new life. One of the few rules to claiming a lot of land was that all participants were to start at the same time. Those who went too soon were called “Sooners.” As time went on, “Sooner” came to be a synonym of Progressivism. The Sooner was an “energetic individual who travels ahead of the human procession.” He was prosperous, ambitious, competent, a “can-do” individual. And Oklahoma was the Sooner State, the land of opportunity, enterprise and economic expansion, very much in the Progressive spirit that engulfed the old South in the 1920’s. OU athletic teams were called either Rough Riders or Boomers for 10 years before the current Sooner nickname emerged in 1908. The university actually derived their name from a pep club called ‘The Sooner Rooters.’ The success of University of Oklahoma athletic teams over the years has made the nickname synonymous with winning.

  2. Hello everyone,

Since LadyH shared the blog addy, I thought I would post something I wrote over a period of time. These tips are all tried and true. Unfortunately….

Handy Cooking Tips By Kate (RubyQ)

    1. When making cinnamon toast, always make sure you actually are getting normal margarine or butter when you reach into the fridge because no matter what anyone tells you, garlic butter does not go with everything.

    2. Be sure that what you take out of the spice rack is in fact cinnamon and not paprika. It isn’t nice with sugar.

    3. Always, always use an oven mitt to remove extremely hot pans from beneath the broiler because… damn!

    4. When eating a snack of packaged highly seasoned corn chips be sure to pay attention to what is actually falling into your mouth. Corn chips are good – big clumps of seasoning that didn’t break up are not.

    5. When grilling bell peppers, do make sure that what you are grilling are in fact small, red bell peppers and not habanero peppers, which are insanely hot and will immediately cause your face to ignite.

    6. If you happen to mistakenly grill and pop into your mouth half of a habanero pepper, make sure you have the following on hand. Ice cream, milk, sour cream, a crash cart, a ventilator and a fire extinguisher.

    7. If all else fails, blame it on the recipe or a geriatric relative.
